Kimbu is an AKC registered Deaf Harlequin Great Dane
She entered rescue with C.O.D.A. on 4/11/05
Kimbu was born on February 10th 2005
We named her Kimbu after the name was suggested by a member of DDEAF's mailing list
Kimbu's sire's name is
KICKIMUS MAXIMUS BUTTICUS
(That name is somewhat reflected in her personality:)
So we used the KI from Kickimus
The M from Maximus
and the BU from Butticus
Kimbu's Dam's name is Princess Cleopatra
thus she is now known as KIMBU CODA'S PRINCESS
Kimbu is not yet available for adoption as she shouldn't even be away from her mother yet at this young age
Kimbu's breeder in TN was going to euthanize Kimbu because she was born deaf
A Great Dane rescue in TN saved Kimbu from the breeder and contacted DDRI (Deaf Dane Rescue Inc) about taking the Kimbu into rescue as the TN rescue had no experience in training a deaf puppy

DDRI contacted us since we were physically much closer to the Kimbu and DDRI did not want to transport such a young puppy all the way to Oregon
Kimbu is safe and doing well in our main Cleveland foster home.
She's a very active puppy with quite an outgoing personality for her age
Her eyesight is very functional and her eyes are blue and clear without any extra skin covering either of her eyes,and she is already learning to watch her humans with her eyes
The first step to sign training a deaf dog is to train them to look at you so that's what we're working on with her right now in addition to potty training.

"Kimbu" fully understands she's a Great Dane and is already eating out of the dane's raised feeder:)
"Kimbu" is already a stuffy toy fanatic and is a silly playful little dane girl

UPDATE 4/21/05
Kimbu is gaining weight nicely and has a great appetitie. Kimbu has nice muscle tone and is very muscular and her coordination is improving. She's still a clumbsy little dane puppy but she's getting good at climbing stairs and walking on a leash
Her foster rescue sister Mindi the Aussie puppy is helping to teach Kimbu " bite inhibition" which she didn't get to learn from her siblings because of being removed from them at 5 weeks of age by the breeder
Kimbu is definately an alpha personality little dane girl who will need a forever family who will be loving , yet firm with her. Great Dane experienced home is preferred. A family who has raised a previous Great Dane from a puppy to a senior dane given priority processing during application screening for Kimbu
UPDATE 5/12/05
Kimbu received her second DHLPP puppy vaccination today and weighed in at 29.7 lbs.
Quite a weight increase since her first weigh in when she received her first puppy DHLPP vaccination and weighed in at 11 lbs at 8 weeks old.
Kimbu is now 12 weeks old.
Kimbu gained 18 lbs in 4 weeks here in rescue:)
Kimbu is growing nicely and Dr. Bob commented on how big boned she is.
UPDATE 5/16/05
Kimbu presented with terrible diareah this morning and would not eat or drink at all and was rushed to the vets
Our Vet kept Kimbu overnight on IV fluids and Kimbu was able to come home on 5/17/05
Kimbu is on several medications and doing much better
Total vet bill for this emergency was $110.00
UPDATE 5/23/05
Kimbu has been eating well and feeling normal but her stool is still not as firm as it should be
A stool sample was sent to the lab for testing and Kimbu continues to be treated with medication
Vet visit cost $65.00
UPDATE 5/27/05
Kimbu's lab results are back and she tested postivie for Giardia
Kimbu is continuing to eat, drink and feel well but her stool is very soft and Kimbu is on a boiled hamburger
and rice diet and is still on "metro" for her Giardia.

Kimbu's new Mom and Dad will continue to work on Kimbu's sign training
Kimbu has plenty of room to run and play in her new safely fenced yard at her new home
